    Bill French, a Juco All-American on the 1960 NJCAA All Tournament Team, was killed with his wife, Mary Kay, in an automobile accident on November 30, 1968. Bill was a popular player with the fans in this area, having played high school basketball at Pretty Prairie, before starring at Hutchinson Community Junior College and then at Wyoming University. It is in Bill's honor that the William B. French Most Valuable Player Award is presented each year to the player voted the outstanding individual player in the tournament. The Award is based on the sportsmanship, playing ability and overall team play which the individual displays during the tournament. The award is presented by the Sons of the American Legion.

    Since 1959 The Hutchinson Rotary Club has presented an annual trophy to the outstanding coach in the tournament. This award is based on general sportsmanlike conduct of the coach and his team both on and off the court, and on ability indicated by the performance and seccess of his players in the tournament. Performance of the team prior to the tournament has no bearing on this choice.

    The Most Outstanding "Small Player Award" honors V.C. "Bud" Obee. Bud was the Tournament Director of the first NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson. Much of the success of the tournament in Hutchinson is due to Bud's efforts in directing the first 24 tournaments. The award is presented annually to the player displaying good character, leadership and loyalty to his fellow players and coaches. He is also judged on his defensive ability, indicative of a small player. To be eliigible for the award a player must be no taller than 6'1".

    The Sesher Sportsmanship Award was initiated in 1966 and is presented annually to the player demonstrating the best sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The trophy is in honor of Charles Sesher, who for many years, was one of the outstanding figures in National Junior College circles.
